Welcome Janice Evans, Head of Biological Sciences
Colleagues and Friends of the Department,
I am very pleased to welcome Dr. Janice Evans as the new Head of the Department of Biological Sciences starting on March 1, 2019. Professor Evans is coming to us via Johns Hopkins University where she was Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Janice’s vigorous research program investigates the underlying molecular mechanisms that insure correct mammalian development with special attention given to understanding how the mammalian embryo inherits the appropriate amount of DNA through sperm-egg interactions and throughout the oocyte’s progression through meiosis.
Professor Evans has served in numerous leadership roles throughout her celebrated academic career including as acting Director of her department’s master’s program where she oversaw curriculum development, student recruitment, and advising. She also served as a Faculty Fellow for the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution Student Outreach Center, as co-chair of the Committee for Diversity and Inclusion, and as President of the Society for the Study of Reproduction. Additionally, she brings a wealth of high quality teaching experience to her new role at Purdue.
Across all areas of learning, discovery and engagement, this is an exciting period for the Department of Biological Sciences where we have sustained ever increasing undergraduate and graduate student enrollments and significant increases in research funding as we continue to advance biological principles with an ever expanding series of new discoveries. I am confident that Professor Evans will lead our Department on to even greater heights and greater successes for our students, staff, and faculty. Please join me in welcoming Janice to our Boilermaker family.
