Dinesh Yernool

Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences

Dr. Yernool's research group is interested in the fundamental question "how do ions, molecules and information traverse membranes?" We seek to answers by studying transport of calcium ion, a potent cellular signal by sodium-calcium exchangers and the polycystin ion channel complex. Defects in the function of sodium-calcium exchangers cause irregular heartbeats and stroke induced neuronal damage, whereas mutations in polycytin genes cause polycystic kidney disease.
