PhD Final Examination & Dissertation Deposit

At least two terms must elapse and be devoted to research between prelim and finals.

Take after completion of the research and writing of the Ph.D. thesis.  This examination (thesis defense) will be publicly announced on the departmental bulletin board and posted on the Department Graduate Oral Exam Calendar.  It will consist of a seminar, open to the public, during which the candidate will summarize his or her thesis research.  Following the seminar there will be an oral examination to be attended only by the Examining Committee members.

The Graduate School requires a minimum of 4 committee members to be present at the defense.  Not more than one dissenting vote is acceptable in certifying the candidate to receive the degree. 

Check List 

  • Read Final Exam Guide for PhD
  • Arrange day, hour and room for final exam at a time convenient for your committee.  Schedule room as far in advance as possible.  Check web site: http://www.bio.purdue.edu/resources/calendar/ for room availability before-emailing.
  • Submit Room Reservation request to calendars@bio.purdue.edu with:
    1. Room Number (i.e. Lilly 1-117)
    2. Date ("mm/dd/yyyy")
    3. Start Time and Duration (or End Time) (don’t forget to allow 30 minutes before and after for set up and clean up.)
    4. Description of the Event (First & Last Name Final Exam)

3 weeks prior to your Final Exam

  1. Complete the Form 8 "Request for Appointment of Examining Committee" to access the form:
    • Log onto MyPurdue/Academics/Graduate School Plan of Study
    • DO NOT change your committee listing
  2. To be approved you must send to the BIOL-Graduate Office
  3. Submit Dissertation to committee & BIOL-Graduate Office
  4. Initiate your Thesis_Acceptance_Form.pdf
  5. The BIOL-Graduate Office will process first iThenticate and report to Major PI.
  6. Formatting: the BIOL-Graduate Office will start the formatting dialog from the dissertation submitted 3-weeks prior to your meeting date. Earlier contact is always encouraged and appreciated.

1-2 business days before your Examination

The BIOL-Graduate Office will send the Department Forms to the Committee.  The Committee will return the forms to the Graduate Office.  A single pdf ocpy of all the forms received will be sent to the student and committee.

Submit the Final Dissertation

  1. Submit the Final Dissertation to the Graduate Office and your Major PI for Final iThemticate Report.
  2. Follow the Form 9 online procedures.
