RE: Severe Weather-Tornadoes & Thunderstorms

Purdue University is located in a region of the United States that is susceptible to dangerous weather events such as severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. On average, there are 23 tornadoes reported in Indiana annually. Faculty, staff, and students can better prepare themselves to respond to severe weather by considering the following:

I. Preparation

- Locate an accessible basement or corridor in your building.
- Identify sheltered areas away from glass & exterior walls.
- Stay informed through local media sources when severe weather is predicted or expected.
- Obtain a National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio with a warning alarm tone. Check the batteries monthly.
- Keep a flashlight in your office/work area, and check the batteries once per month.
- Contact Tom Cooper, Safety and Security, for more information on Tornadoes.

II. Response

a. A "Tornado Warning" issued by the National Weather Service means a tornado has been sighted and you must seek shelter immediately. When an exterior siren sounds or a NOAA weather radio sounds a warning alarm tone, you must seek shelter immediately. (Exterior sirens will sound for three minutes.)
- Proceed to the lowest floor of any building.
- Position yourself in an interior corridor away from windows or glass.

b. A "Tornado Warning" can be considered ALL CLEAR when the National Weather Service states that the "Tornado Warning" has expired. Local radio and television can be used as a source for the expiration of the "Tornado Warning" time period.

c. Always remain in a place of shelter until you receive an all-clear message or until you are sure the tornado has passed.

d. Dial 911 (Purdue Dispatch) to report any emergency conditions resulting from the storm.

e. Stay out of damaged buildings.

f. Avoid buildings and areas with broken utility lines (i.e., gas, electric, water).

III. Additional Information
- For detailed actions concerning Tornado Emergencies, see the web at http://www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/pdf/tornado_procedures.pdf
- Free Tornado Awareness Sessions are available. Visit this web site for more details: http://www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/pdf/tornado_awareness_2008.pdf
- See Executive Memorandum No. C-35 for University policies related to Adverse Weather.
- Contact Ron Wright at 494-0446 for assistance in developing emergency response procedures in your area.

The Wade Utility Plant will conduct high pressure steam blows to clean the inside of new steam piping. These steam blows are planned for Thursday and Friday, January 17 & 18 as well as Tuesday and Wednesday, January 22 & 23. These blows are necessary to assure complete cleanliness of the new steam pipe installation as part of the Boiler #2 upgrades.

The sounds will consist of periodic loud "pops" which will be followed by a progressively louder rushing noise, similar to the sounds of a jet airplane taking off. Each blow will last from 3 or 4 minutes and up to 10 minutes or so. There will be a series of these blows each day.

RE: Holiday Fire Safety Tips
During the holiday season, the Purdue University Fire Department offers the following fire safety tips:
- Install smoke detectors on every level of your home. Test smoke detector batteries monthly.
- Change the batteries in your smoke detectors each time you change you clocks for daylight saving time.
- Never place your Christmas tree near a heat source, including a fireplace or heating vent. The heat will dry out the tree.
- Never dispose of holiday tree branches in a fireplace or wood-burning stove.
- When a tree becomes dry, discard it promptly. Many communities establish recycling centers for trees.
- When choosing an artificial tree, look for one that has been treated with a fire retardant.
- Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, and broken or cracked sockets.
- Only use UL-listed lighting equipment.
- Do not overload outlets. Connect holiday lights to circuit protected outlet strips.
- Do not leave holiday lights unattended.
- Avoid using candles. If you do use them, make sure they are in stable holders and place them away from holiday decorations.
- Never leave your home with candles burning.
- When purchasing a fresh cut tree, bounce the tree on the ground. If many needles fall off, the tree has been cut too long ago. Select another tree.

An estimated 33 million homes will have natural Christmas trees this holiday season. Visit this link to view a video showing the danger of a dry Christmas tree:
RE: Sidewalk and Road Disruption on Third Across From Aquatics Center - Nov. 28
A portion of the westbound lane on Third Street, across from the Boilermaker Aquatics Center, will be periodically closed and the sidewalk on the north side of Third Street will be closed throughout the day tomorrow, Wednesday, November 28. This disruption is due to the repair of a manhole. Please use caution in the area.
