Outreach

In keeping with Al Lindsey's vision we encourage the use of the Ross for all forms of community and educational outreach. Purdue's School of Science has developed a program called K-12 Outreach, wherein Purdue faculty, staff, and students make an effort to stimulate interest in science and related careers among grade school students in the state of Indiana. In conjunction with this effort the Department of Biological Sciences uses the Ross Reserve to assist in environmental and natural resource education.

Workshops

In 1996 a summer workshop for AP Environmental Science teachers was created under Purdue's School of Science Biology Outreach program. This workshop brought teachers to the Ross to learn strategies for testing basic principles in natural systems.

The Tippecanoe County Parks and the local Audubon Society both hold workshops in natural history education at the Ross Reserve as well.

Courses

The Ross Reserve is used for the Summer Biology Experience, a summer course for high-school students in quantitative biology. Students learn basic ecological principles and quantitative skills on data they aquire at the Ross.

Several ecological projects, funded by a Howard Hughes Institute grant, are also conducted at the Ross.

Conferences

The Lindsey Lab has hosted short conferences including the Standards Committee of the Indiana Association for Biology Teachers. The lab has also been used to host public receptions for invited seminar speakers.
