The purpose of my teaching, which focuses on the function of the human body in health and disease, is to train first-year medical students and undergraduates planning to enter the health professions or health-related fields. The major target groups for my two-semester human anatomy and physiology course, BIOL 203/204, are freshmen from Purdue's School of Nursing and freshmen and sophomores from the School of Health Sciences. In a separate course, I provide freshman medical students at the Lafayette Center for Medical Education with a solid basis for understanding the cardiovascular system and its disorders, as well as the knowledge required to deal with diseases and abnormal conditions affecting the brain.

The laboratory is a central component of the human anatomy and physiology course. Over the past five years we have used equipment purchased with National Science Foundation and departmental support to improve the variety and quality of physiological experiments carried out on experimental animals and on human subjects. These experiments are now approaching a level of sophistication that matches the material discussed in the lectures.
