BIOL 293, Planning Your Future in Biology

Dr. Richard Harris, PhD (BS ’92) spoke recently with students in the sophomore seminar course BIOL 293, Planning Your Future in Biology, taught by Professor Richard Kuhn, Department Head and Kathleen Weller, Academic Advisor. Harris is a Research Assistant Professor at the Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His background is in basic science and clinical research in alternative medicine. Harris received his PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1997. Following his graduate work, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, studying the rhythmic properties of neural cultures. He studied acupuncture and completed an internship at the Maryland Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and subsequently received his MS degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis at the University of Michigan.Dr. Harris is currently investigating mechanisms of acupuncture in the treatment of chronic pain conditions. He is a member of the American Pain Society and the Society for Acupuncture Research. He serves as Associate Editor of and Scientific Advisor for the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies, and is an ad hoc reviewer for several other scientific publications.
