Description:
The First Year undergraduate Research Experience (FYRE) courses promote discovery-based learning and student engagement in research by guiding students through the process of scientific discovery. In this particular FYRE course, students will spend the first 5-6 weeks conducting a series of directed experiments to learn the basics of plant ecology and develop a toolkit of research techniques. The class will then transition to designing and implementing independent research projects that investigate the impacts of environmental stressors on plant reproduction, utilizing the research techniques learned in the first portion of the class. The course will culminate in a public presentation of these research projects in a poster session presented to faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences. Throughout the semester, students will obtain fundamental research skills in biology while learning how to ask and answer original research questions. Critical thinking, experimental design, interpretation of data, and communication of results will be stressed.
