BIOL 19500 Biodiversity, Ecology And Evolution
Session Offered:
Fall Credit 3.0
Prerequisites:
None. Course Restriction: Biology Majors only and Consent of Department Required
Description:
Biology 195 is a course for biology majors similar in content to Biology 121, but with several important differences. The course is a small lecture format with an extra hour of instruction per week. This format allows students to interact directly with the instructor during lectures, to carry out small group activities emphasizing problem solving during lecture and to be evaluated by multiple forms of assessment (essay, multiple choice and take-home exams, problem sets, group activities, research papers). Using an evolutionary framework, the course emphasizes the hierarchical organization of life and how interactions at each level have contributed to the development of organismal complexity and diversity. Topics include biomolecules, respiration and photosynthesis, mitosis and meiosis, genetics, epigenetics, gene expression, natural selection, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, ecological interactions, animal behavior and conservation biology.
