Grading:

Students are graded on a straight scale, with the maximum cut-offs being 90% = A; 80% = B; 66% = C; 50% = D; below 50% = F.  In recitation, there is either a multiple-choice quiz or a group activity with discussion, worth 10 points. Each group will turn in the results of their collaboration. For lecture there are three, hour exams and a comprehensive final exam that are in multiple-choice format. The hour exams are worth 50 points, and the final exam is worth either 50 or 100 points, depending on the following: if one (or more) of the hour exam scores is lower than the final exam score, then the lowest of the hour exam scores is dropped, and the final exam counts for 100 points. If the final exam score is the lowest, then it is scored on the basis of a total of 50 points, and all three hour exam scores are kept. The three hour exams and final will count for a total of 200 points. For the laboratory, there are three practical exams, each worth 35 points.  In addition, up to five laboratory participation points can be earned during each laboratory session. Bonus points are available for writing a brief report on an assigned topic and for completing the end-of-course evaluation.
