Government Grants

Some fellowships are granted by a governmental agency directly to the student, who is free to use this award at one of several colleges or universities of their choice. Applicants who rank high in their respective undergraduate class and score in the upper percentiles of the GRE exam are encouraged to apply for available outside fellowships. Consult with your undergraduate advisor, this Department, or a sponsor for additional information. A book entitled, Annual Register of Grant Support, which is available in most University Libraries, is another source of information.

Applicants must have their application, transcripts, references, and GRE scores on file well before the granting agency deadline. The applicant writes directly to the granting agency for information and application forms. United States citizenship is usually required. Fellows normally receive a stipend for full-time study toward a Ph.D. plus tuition and fees. In some cases certain travel expenses and dependency allowances are available.

Applications for NSF Graduate Fellowships and NSF Minority Graduate Fellowships may be obtained from:

All applicants are expected to use NSF’s FastLane Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) process: https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/grfp.

Inquiries should be made early, as the deadline for filing the application is normally the first week of November.
