Fellowships and Traineeships
DEADLINE. Students must have their application file complete with applications, transcripts, references, GRE scores and TOEFL scores if required by January 15, 2007, to be considered for the following appointments. Applications completed after January 15, 2007, can be considered for some fellowships and traineeships administered by the Department if vacancies occur.
TRAINING GRANTS. The Department of Biological Sciences has faculty who are currently members on the following training grants:
- Biophysics Training Grant
(National Institutes of Health) The department usually has training grants awarded by this agency for student support. Trainees receive stipends comparable to research assistants. All tuition and fees are paid by the training grant. The Biophysics training grant normally supports entering students with stipends up to $20,772. - GAANN Fellowships in Ecology
(Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need Ph. D. Program in Multidisciplinary Ecology) Students who plan to do research in ecology, evolution or population biology are eligible for up to three years of fellowship support. Training in teaching is provided in addition to research. A supplies and travel fund is provided. All tuition and fees are paid by the training grant. The current stipend is $21,500, based on financial need. - Drug and Carcinogen-DNA Interactions Training Grant
(National Cancer Institute) This training program provides a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary training in cancer across the boundary between chemistry and biology. The training grant has provided a mechanism to provide biology students with a solid foundation in the molecular basis for cancer. The current stipend is $20,772.
UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIPS. The Graduate School provides several fellowships to entering biology graduate students each year. These normally include at least one Andrews Fellowship and two Ross Fellowships. In addition, Purdue Fellowships for Black, Mexican-American, Native-American, and Puerto Rican United States citizens and a Special Initiative Fellowship for women have been made available for each of the last several years. The Andrews and Purdue Fellowships are two-year appointments while the Ross and Special Initiative Fellowships are for one year. All University fellowships provide tuition remittance except for the Graduate Staff fees as well as insurance supplements. This year the fellowships ranged from $20,500 to $23,000. Subsequent years of support are normally through teaching or research appointments.
DEPARTMENTAL FELLOWSHIPS. The department offers one Abbott Fellowship to an incoming underrepresented minority graduate student most years. The fellowship current level is $20,500. It includes remittance of tuition.
