Financial Aid: Graduate Assistantships
-
Graduate Teaching Appointments. Graduate appointees are normally involved in laboratory instruction in courses offered by the Department. Teaching appointments are available with stipends of $1,534 per month for ten months, plus two-month summer research appointments at the same level for first-year pre-doctoral students for a total of $18,408. The Department will supplement the first-year Ph.D. student’s stipend with $2,092. The combined appointments amount to an annual stipend of $20,500 for August 2006 thru July 2007. The work obligation of the teaching appointment runs from approximately the middle of August to the middle of May. Most teaching appointments require approximately 20 hours per week, including student contact, paper grading, preparation, and all other work. After the first year the Ph.D. student may be supported by a research grant, a teaching appointment, or a combination of the two, depending on the student and the major professor.

Graduate Research Assistant. Graduate assistantships are usually available to predoctoral students who have passed the qualifying exam and are engaged in research leading to the Ph.D. degree. Such appointments carry a stipend equal to or higher than that given for teaching, usually for 12 months of service.
